Hair Transplant is a minimally invasive medical procedure to restore your crown of glory by transplanting healthy hair grafts onto your scalp to restore areas of hair loss. This procedure has evolved over the last few decades with better treatment options to reduce scarring and downtime as well as enhanced treatment protocols to promote healthier hair growth and retention of transplanted hair follicles.
A hair transplant works by transplanting stronger hair follicles from the occiput area (back of the head) to the front or vertex (top of the head) because these hairs are generally more resistant to DHT and will continue to grow, as if they are still at the back of the scalp.
Male Pattern and Female Pattern Hair Loss
FUE vs FUT
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) differs from FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant or Strip Hair Transplant) in several ways. The first is that it is noticeable that FUE does not leave any linear scars, or any noticeable changes (other than a renewed lease of life for your hair.)
Strip hair transplants, a method by which a piece of scalp covered in hair is removed in order to get hair follicles needed for transplantation, usually from the back of the head, leaves very distinctive lateral scars across the back of the head.
Strip hair transplant also has a long recovery time, especially compared to FUE. FUE leaves some initial bleeding, but the donor area usually recovers completely within 7 days. However, with strip harvesting, as a part of the scalp is removed, it can take weeks for the scars to heal.
The results possible with FUE are of the highest quality and naturalness and undetectable which is the most significant advantage over the strip hair transplant option.
The FUE Process
FUE (follicular unit extraction) is a type of hair transplant procedure that involves extracting individual hair follicles from a donor part of the body, usually the sides and back of the head. These individual follicles are then implanted in the areas that are affected. Typically, with the men suffering from male pattern baldness this will be the classic horseshoe area.
During an FUE transplant, a highly experienced doctor extracts hair follicles from the donor area, typically the back of the neck, using a specialised extraction instrument less than 1mm in diameter. Follicles are then transferred to the recipient area on your scalp and implanted using a powerful stereo microscope in groups of one to four hairs, just as they grow in nature.
This is a minimally invasive procedure so you will remain fully conscious the whole time as only local anesthetic is required. Recovery time is short and the risk of complications is low.The doctor, using specialist micro surgical needles, then punctures the scalp area that is to receive the grafts. Our doctors are experts at blending the hair in, inserting the grafts at an angle and density that matches the original hair, so it will resemble a natural and realistic hair pattern.
What makes FUE so remarkable is the way hairs are implanted. Experienced specialists carefully map your hair growth before implantation so they know where and on what angle to place each follicle. It is an exacting process that takes a lot of experience and expertise, but we believe the result is worth it. With a successful FUE transplant, donor hair grows, moves and feels the way it used to. This is the highest-quality hair transplant available.
As this is your natural hair, just moved from place to place, it will grow exactly as normal hair and is permanent.
Downtime and Recovery
Unlike strip hair transplant, FUE hair transplantation does not require large areas of the scalp to be harvested. There is also no linear incision on the back of the head, nor does it leave a linear scar. As individual follicles are removed, it only leaves small, puncture scars, which are practically invisible to the naked eye. There is hardly any pain or discomfort following the FUE procedure with the average recovery time of one week. For hair transplant procedure done at the classic horseshoe area, a bandana will be recommended to be worn over the next 2 weeks to protect your new hair grafts from physical and sun damage. After 2 weeks, you may opt for a loose baseball cap over a bandana.
The next day immediately following the procedure, you will return to our clinic for change of dressing and wound cleansing. The 72 hours following the hair transplant procedure is critical as your hair grafts are still healing and you would not want to touch the area.
On the 4th day after your hair transplant, you will be advised to start post-op hair washing by rinsing with cups of water rather than direct water pressure from shower heads. Light shampooing is possible with the use of gentle baby shampoo for sensitive scalp.
Tea tree oil or olive oil can be used from 14 days post-treatment by lightly massaging it on your scalp to remove scabs that form on your scalp from the tiny wound scars.
From the 4th week, transplanted hairs will automatically begin to fall off. But this is pretty normal and should not panic you. The transplanted hairs as well as a part of existing hairs around the recipient area will shed before they begin to grow at a normal pace of half an inch per month.
You can start shampooing as per normal with your favorite shampoo 30 days after the procedure.
Other Applications of FUE Hair Transplant
Besides transplanting hair onto the scalp, it can also be done to create hairline, sideburns, beard and even eyebrows!
